WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats and Republicans say signs of progress are emerging in urgent negotiations to avert the looming 'fiscal cliff' ahead of a midnight deadline.

A person familiar with the negotiations says Democrats have offered to extend tax cuts for families making up to $450,000 a year and individuals making up to $400,000. President Barack Obama originally wanted the tax cuts to be extended only for families making up to $250,000 a year.

Unless an agreement is reached and approved by Congress by the start of New Year's Day, more than $500 billion in 2013 tax increases will begin to take effect and $109 billion will be carved from defense and domestic programs

The person familiar with the talks requested anonymity in order to discuss the internal negotiations.

American Airlines pilots approve MOU for agreements under merger

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Union leaders who represent American Airlines pilots approved a tentative agreement Saturday for how the airline could merge with US Airways.

The board of the Allied Pilots Association (APA) said it voted 11-5 to approve a so-called memorandum of understanding that, with approval of other parties, "would serve as a framework for an agreement" if the airlines merge.

The union declined to provide details of the agreement, citing a non-disclosure agreement it sign as a party to the merger talks.

American, which is restructuring in bankruptcy court, is in talks to merge with US Airways. American could merge as part of the structuring process or exit bankruptcy and then decide whether to merge. A merger could be announced as soon as January 9, when AMR's board is due to meet.

A framework for the unions' labor agreements are a crucial part of the merger discussions. The APA said it is in talks with officials from American's parent, AMR Corp, US Airways and the US Airline Pilots Association, which represents US Airways pilots. Also included in the talks is the Unsecured Creditors Committee, which represents creditors of American.

(AP) ? Nearly a year after a stroke left him barely able to move the left side of his body, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is expected to climb the 45 steps to the Senate's front door this week ? a walk that's significant not just for Illinois' junior senator, but also for medical researchers and hundreds of thousands of stroke patients.

It's estimated only one-third of patients return to work after a stroke, said Dr. Elliot Roth, medical director of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's New Patient Recovery Unit and AbilityLab, where Kirk recovered.

The 53-year-old Republican will return to the high-profile, demanding life of a Washington lawmaker after an experimental rehabilitation so intense it's often compared to boot camp, Roth said. Patients keep grueling schedules, often spending eight hours a day or more re-learning how to walk, talk and do other tasks.

Because there are risks to going back to work unprepared, patients do "practice runs" of what it will be like to be back on the job. If and when they successfully return to work, Roth added, "It's like having a great symphony play and recognizing it's all the practice beforehand that went into it."

Kirk will walk back into a Congress that has grappled for weeks over how to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff," a series of across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts due to take effect Tuesday. President Barack Obama indicated Monday afternoon that a deal was in sight, but not yet finalized. But House Republicans said they will not vote on the issue Monday night, and it remained unclear whether the Senate would vote Monday.

The Illinois senator's return will be inspiring to fellow stroke patients, said Frank Watson, the former Republican leader of the Illinois Senate who resigned from office after his 2008 stroke.

"For us in the stroke fraternity, we're very happy to see this occur, to see somebody taking their life back," Watson said. "There are so many people who don't make it back."

Kirk, who won President Barack Obama's former Senate seat in 2010, checked himself into a hospital in January 2012 after feeling dizzy. Tests revealed that the avid swimmer had suffered a major stroke. Surgeons had to remove two small pieces of destroyed brain tissue, and temporarily removed a 4-inch by 8-inch portion of his skull to allow for swelling.

Doctors said movement in Kirk's left side was severely limited. He was in intensive care and would need speech therapy, but they expected he would make a full mental recovery.

Within days, they said Kirk was asking for his Blackberry. In May, Kirk released a video updating his progress and showing footage of him walking with the help of a harness, a cane and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago staff. It also included clips of Kirk speaking while sitting in a chair, his left shoulder lower than his right and the left side of his face still largely paralyzed.

Kirk said in the video that his staff had counted the steps from the parking lot to the front door of the Senate. It was his hope to climb all 45 of them someday, "to fight for the people of Illinois."

In a separate video released three months later, Kirk was shown climbing stairs at the RIC and working in his home office. He said he had moved back to his home in the north Chicago suburbs, and that he was talking to his staff several times a day and keeping up with business in Washington via email. He also touted the experimental therapy, through which he had logged almost 15 miles and 145 flights of stairs.

Roth said the study represents a new approach to stroke rehabilitation, which has traditionally been slower and more cautious. In the study, one group ? which included Kirk ? was pushed harder and walked more, in an effort to see if it led to a quicker recovery.

In November, Kirk climbed 37 floors of stairs inside Chicago's Willis Tower as part of an RIC fundraiser. One of his therapists called it "remarkable progress."

Kirk has said little to the media throughout his rehabilitation. Through his staff, he declined to comment about his return to Washington. They have said he'll walk the steps Jan. 3, when the new Congress convenes.

Watson, who was in a wheelchair for months after his stroke, said it will be important for Kirk to take it slow and make time for continued rehabilitation, noting "it's not over."

Watson's stroke affected his emotions, prompting him to break down in tears at times he previously would not have. It's something that still happens a little, he said.

Moments later, talking about the significance of Kirk's return, Watson began to cry.

"We need success stories," he said, "and Mark's one of them."

Are You Ready To Market Your Business? - Maynas Eric

All companies need a way to find their audience online. Social media marketing allows businesses to do this rather quickly and easily. Social media marketing is a new and favorite way to start a company. With strong business acumen and several of the ideas in this piece, you have the ability to utilize social media and really grow your business.

People love to be able to comment on your blog! Especially if you don?t give out email addresses or other contact information. Allow comments to be posted, but keep a close eye on them. Make sure you delete spams and rude or offensive comments quickly.

    Social Media

TIP! Try to offer your customers the social media equivalent of a face-to-face exchange. Customers don?t enjoy speaking to the faceless representative of a large company.

Research has shown that business hours throughout the week are the times when people most read social media postings. Many software programs and applications offer features that allow you to regulate the timing of your social media posts to ensure maximum visibility.

You should find blogs in your industry and comment regularly on articles and news. That establishes you as a presence on the Internet, and you look like an expert. Also, make sure that your comments are legible and filled with content to build a solid reputation. This, in turn, will increase the level of traffic and popularity for your site.

Be sure to update your social media profiles on a regular basis. Your audience will not stay interested if you have outdated content on your profiles.

TIP! Try interacting with your customers as much as possible. Find out if they have any blogs or popular threads online and post whenever you can generate appropriate and engaging comments.

Because of social networking and media?s viral nature, the news regarding your contest will be spread everywhere extremely fast. Try to build your contests with creativity and fun, although they should always tie in closely with the products and services you?re promoting. A creative way for people to enter would be by designing your company a new logo, or one for an upcoming product.

Frequently, leave friendly posts and helpful comments on the pages of fellow blogger?s sites. If you are social, then people will see this and want to be friends with you. Find people blogging about your business niche. Start talking to the people who post on these blogs. This is a great opportunity for networking.

Your online storefront can become easier for your customers to use with effective social media tie-ins. Building a Facebook store and making it accessible from your other sites, makes a great addition to your online presence. Facebook users like to look around the site and may find your site and your products, and may even make a purchase, all while staying on Facebook. This can let them have easier access to your products, without making them leave Facebook and go to your site.

TIP! Make your business more personal by posting pictures of employees and the inside of your office. People like to see an actual person working the business; therefore, it is beneficial to post photos of your office or business events.

Track the traffic onto your site to see the fluctuations and trends for different times of the day. It is crucial that you do not get discouraged because the day hasn?t been going well. Instead, focus on identifying trends and shifts that will allow you make more informed decisions.

    Marketing Company

Be careful if you are considering using a marketing company for social media. Some of these companies are frauds. They use thousands of fraudulent Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts, made through automated registration bots and proxy servers. Your advertisement it then rarely seen by a real person despite the view count and the large amount of money you have paid the social media marketing company.

TIP! To have your business become known, using social media marketing is a good way to get people to notice you. Your company can receive positive attention when users of social media sites discuss your product or other things about your business.

Animated short looks back on 2012's big gaming moments | Joystiq

    Description

Two decades have passed since the demonic lords, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, set out across the world of Sanctuary on a vicious rampage, twisting humanity to their unholy will. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils, the memory fades slowly. When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram Cathedral seeking clues to defeat new stirrings of evil, a fiery harbinger of doom falls from the heavens, striking the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. This fire from the sky reawakens ancient evils and calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells once again.

Shop at a Salvage Grocery Store and Save a Ton of Money on Food

Shop at a Salvage Grocery Store and Save a Ton of Money on FoodWhile there are lots of ways to save money at the regular supermarket, to make your food dollars go even further, consider shopping at a salvage grocery (a.k.a. grocery outlet). Savings of 50% or more are common at these lesser-known food sellers.

These outlets get their food from supermarkets that have to return groceries to their warehouses. A few of the reasons this happens is if the supermarket orders more items than they need, a case is dropped (lightly damaging the packaging for a couple of cans or boxes), items are overstocked because they're out-of-season, or even if the manufacturer changes the packaging or re-brands the item.

All that unused inventory ends up at these salvage stores, where you can buy them at rock-bottom prices (e.g., Terra Chips for $0.25 a bag or a gallon of juice for $0.75, according to a thread on Frugal Village?though the prices are from a few years ago). Many outlets even accept manufacturer's coupons but might not accept credit cards.

Frugal Village also has a list of salvage groceries by state; it might not be complete, but it's a start. Update: There's another list here (thanks amandaztoy!).

    96% Monsters, Inc. 3D

    All Critics (178) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (182) | Rotten (8) | DVD (45)

It may be harder nowadays to dazzle audiences with fancy visual effects, but Monsters, Inc. 3D proves that smart, imaginative storytelling still does the trick every time.

Most of the charm of "Monsters Inc." comes from its vocal cast.

If history is any guide, you and your family - whether young or old - will probably want to see "Monsters University" over and over.

The movie itself stands up well, even from an adult, two-dimensional perspective.

Its reassuring message is more relevant than ever.

The good guys are those who realize that laughter is stronger than fear. That's a message worth taking to heart these jittery days.

There's really little reason to check out Monsters, Inc. 3D in... well, 3D, rather than going for a good old-fashioned 2D screening instead.

It does well, but not brilliantly: an amusing trifle from a studio whose best work still lay ahead of it.

Not quite a Pixar classic, but funny, witty and visually spectacular enough to be enjoyed again on the big screen.

Monsters, Inc. continues a positive 3D trend for the company, who appear to be selecting their upgraded titles wisely, choosing features that benefit from the additional depth.

Not even the opportunistic 3D-ification can squander the pure delight of the film's meticulously detailed world of ragtag creatures.

    [A] sparkling cartoon ...

John Lasseter and the Pixar crew know how to turn shared human feelings and experiences into strange and delightful animated features. "Monsters, Inc." is one of their most solid efforts.

    A typically engrossing Pixar effort...

Cute, kid-friendly monster movie; may scare sensitive kids.

Though "Monsters, Inc." relies more on spinning-plates plot than its Pixar peers, this romp retains the charm and heart of the animation juggernaut's forte - adding extra to ordinary hopes, in this case leaving great impressions on the kids we love.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A stunning release of one of Pixar's most sadly underappreciated works.

Monsters, Inc. is a celebration of unforgettable characters and a world unlike any other.

From its jazzy main titles to its gentle fadeout, Monsters, Inc. has something that money can't buy. It's likeable. [Blu-ray]

Burstwick man Ron Smith lobbies MPs over flood insurance | This is ...

HOUSEHOLDERS in East Yorkshire are growing increasingly concerned they will be left without flood insurance next year.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has expressed its concern the Government has failed to reach a new agreement to replace the Statement of Principles.

    1. Campaign: Villager Ron Smith next to Burstwick drain

    2. 'Massive impact': Men from Belfor Flood and Fire Restoration clear a house in Trinity Close, Burstwick, after the 2007 floods.

The statement ensures firms will provide flood cover as long as the Government continues to invest in flood defences.

The agreement is due to expire in June.

Now, Burstwick resident and flood campaigner Ron Smith has travelled to London to lobby MPs as part of a representative group from the National Flood Forum.

He said: "The Statement of Principles may not run out until June but residents of East Yorkshire are already suffering.

"Some people have already been refused insurance.

"One neighbour was paying ?500 but now he has been quoted ?1,600 with a ?10,000 excess.

"Luckily, he has found somewhere cheaper but there is no consensus.

"There is also a real problem with those trying to sell houses.

"Potential buyers in East Yorkshire are put off when they ask about flooding.

"This will have a massive impact in East Yorkshire."

Almost 17,000 homes in Hull could struggle to secure home insurance against the risk of flooding when the Government agreement ends.

Mr Smith, whose home was flooded in 2007, believes there are obvious options.

He said: "We are looking at a simple pooling arrangement with some kind of national levy.

"Already, everyone pays ?8 towards flood insurance and insurance companies are asking for it to be raised to ?13.

"The other option is for the Government to provide an overdraft facility."

The voluntary Statement of Principles has been in place since 2000.

The ABI insists time is running out to get a new agreement in place before the Statement of Principles expires.

Aidan Kerr, head of property at the Association of British Insurers, said: "Insurers want to bring much-needed clarity on the future of flood insurance to customers like those in Hull, for whom the recent heavy rainfall across the UK will be a reminder of the devastation caused by the major floods of 2007.

"The industry has developed the only workable model to safeguard both the availability and affordability of flood cover.

"The ball is now in the Government's court to provide certainty to those at high flood risk.

"We continue in our discussions with Government but are frustrated with the current impasse we have hit around their reluctance to provide a temporary overdraft facility for the industry's not-for-profit scheme.

"No country in the world has a free market for flood insurance with affordable cover for those at high risk without some form of government involvement.

"It is vital the Government works with the industry to tackle this issue together."

Students' online and offline social networks can predict course grades

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students, and similarly weaker ones will pair with weaker students."

    23 Dec

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

    • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
    • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
    • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
    • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
    • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

Les Miserables Movie Review: Hugh Jackman Mesmerizes, Anne ...

    Us Rating: ****

    Get ready to weep!

Unless you count the black-and-white title card, there's nothing -- nothing -- understated about this adaptation of the beloved musical. Which is precisely what makes it such a glorious marvel. We're talking wall-to-wall operatic numbers and the ultimate five-hankie redemption tale.

    PHOTOS: 2012 holiday movie preview

Most scintillating of all, some supremely talented stars sing their bloody hearts out. Hugh Jackman mesmerizes as Jean Valjean, an ex-prisoner who breaks parole in 1815 France, then gets hunted for the next 17 years by his prison guard, Javert (Russell Crowe).

    PHOTOS: Dramatic movie transformations

Along the way, Valjean encounters ailing factory worker Fantine (Anne Hathaway) and decides to raise her daughter (Amanda Seyfried in adulthood). The actors eschew the lip-synching and go live (often in extreme close-up), which heightens the drama: During a confrontation between Valjean and Javert, the baritone Crowe sings with such anger, the spittle ricochets onto Jackman's face.

Newcomer Samantha Barks, as heartsick Eponine, openly weeps during "On My Own." And, in limited screen time, a broken-down Hathaway leaves an indelible impression, crushing "I Dreamed a Dream."

    Stop cringing, musical haters!

A film that oozes this kind of passion only works at full tilt. So embrace it and, yes, hear the people sing.

Hidden Charges Can Create Credit Card Debt for Many Consumers ...

    By John Clark

Each year, millions of American consumers are buried under the weight of credit card debt. And for the folks who don?t discharge their debts through Chapter 7 bankruptcy, this financial weight can be crippling.

Much of this debt, however, might be bogus, especially for consumers who fail to pay attention to so-called ?gray charges? on their credit card statements.

Savvy consumers should watch out for avoidable charges that account for billions of dollars in revenue for credit card companies each year, according to a report from NBC News.

Zombie Subscriptions, Automatic Renewals, and Cost Creep

According to BillGuard, a consumer protection company, one in four credit card users is hit with gray charges each year, and the average annual cost of these hidden fees is a staggering $358.

Three of the most pernicious gray charges include ?zombie? subscriptions, automatic renewals, and cost creep, according to sources.

First, ?zombie? subscriptions occur when consumers cancel a particular service, but that service comes back to life without their permission. When this happens, the canceled service may resume appearing on their cards, without the consumer even recognizing the gray charge.

In addition, credit card users often sign up for particular items and forget to cancel their automatic payments before the deadline for their automatic renewal.

To make matters worse, many merchants will refuse to cancel the charge after it appears on a credit card, so shoppers should be very careful about signing up for automated renewal services.

Finally, cost creep has become a major issue for credit card users. This occurs when a purchase that takes place monthly or quarterly, say, for a magazine subscription, rises by a minor amount each payment period.

Consumers who do not check their statements on a regular basis could lose a significant amount of money to cost creep.

Questionable Credit Card Charges are Widespread

While some consumers may think these unsavory tactics are limited to just a few credit card providers, sources say the problem is widespread.

According to Yaron Samid, the chief executive officer of BillGuard, gray charges create ?billions of dollars for these companies? and he is ?surprised by the amount of legitimate companies? that have ?repeatedly confused and deceived customers into paying.?

For example, AOL offers dial-up subscriptions for online access with automatic monthly billing. A recent survey shows that three million consumers still used this outdated service, but sources speculate that only a fraction of these people still use the dial-up service.
